School Rugby Tours to Cape Town & South Africa:
It
is believed by many, that for pure enjoyment, passion and
commitment, little beats the rivalry that is produced at
school level. This certainly is the case in South
Africa, especially in the Western Cape Region, where
inter-school rivalry has been fought out on the rugby
fields since the late 19th century.
The
schools highlighted above are a few of the oldest in the
region, with annual clashes that can be likened to any
test match in the “real rugby world” and have been
ongoing for well over a century, but, there are many
others, in fact hundreds, that do battle every Saturday
morning during the season.
Traditional
Derbies include:
-
The
annual match between Bishops (Diocesan College) and
SACS (South African College School), which is believed
to date back to 1892
-
SACS
and Wynberg Boys’, the two oldest state schools in
South Africa, still battle it out on Derby Saturday
-
The
annual derby between Paarl Boys’ High and Paarl Gym,
dating back to 1915, which attracts crowds in excess
of 15 000 every year
-
More
recently, the intense rivalry between Bishops and
Rondebosch Boys’, a contest that attracts thousands
on wintry Saturday mornings
